First potato crop harvested in the UK

July 6, 2023

The initial harvest of white potatoes in the UK has taken place following the wet plantings earlier in the year and subsequent prolonged dry conditions. Market sources indicate that most of the potato harvest is expected to be delayed as a result. On 4th July 2023, the Mintec Benchmark Prices (MBP) for Grade 1 White Packing Potatoes EXW England [Mintec Code: POWP] were assessed at £400/mt, showing a £20/mt decrease compared to the previous week. The price relief brings an end to the continuous upward trend that began in March, driven by strong demand and limited supply. According to market sources, further price relief is anticipated as more potato crops enter the market.

Meanwhile, Maris Piper prices continue to rise as the harvest is only projected to commence around the beginning of August according to market participants. The availability of Maris Piper supplies on the free-buy market is increasingly scarce, resulting in fewer trade transactions. On 4th July 2023, the Mintec Benchmark Prices for Grade 1 Packing Maris Piper EXW England [Mintec Code: KZ03] were assessed at £430/mt, representing a £5 increase from the previous week.
