The latest Interpera forecast projected European pear production at 1.9 million tonnes for the 2023/24 marketing year. This would mark the second-lowest production level in the past decade, with only the 2021/22 market year, at 1.84 million tonnes, being lower, according to the USDA’s past production figures. During the Interpera Conference held on 28th June, the Mintec Price for Spanish pears was €2.43/kg, reflecting a 35% year-on-year increase.
The forecasted production includes six countries. Italy's pear production has been adversely affected by poor fruit set and flooding in Romagna, potentially threatening orchard survival. The Netherlands' production has been impacted by inadequate rainfall during key growth periods a harvest similar to the previous year is expected. France is experiencing a notable 26% decline in production, with the southern regions being the most severely affected. Conversely, Portugal and Belgium have an optimistic outlook as the fruit has set well, with pear sizes larger than average. After a challenging season last year, Spain anticipates a substantial 53% increase in production. However, the full effects of drought on fruit size in certain areas remain uncertain.
During the conference, the importance of increasing pear consumption and communicating to consumers that fruit is affordable was a common statement. The event also highlighted the influence of climate change and the need for adaptation in farming practices. Implementing measures such as drip irrigation, using drought-tolerant varieties, installing capillary run-off systems, and planting more trees were discussed as potential ways to mitigate the impact of climate change while ensuring a more resilient future.
