Several noteworthy developments have occurred in the insect protein sector in recent days. Tyson Foods has entered a joint venture with Netherlands-based Protix to build an insect ingredient facility in the continental United States. The location for the plant is currently being determined, but the companies expect the plant to be ready to ramp up operations towards the end of 2025.

Meanwhile, Munich-based FarmInsect will receive €8 million in Series A funding. With the funds, the company plans to intensify R&D activities to expand its breeding lines. A further goal is to open an additional production facility. Scotland-based insect genetics business Beta Bugs has announced that it will receive approximately €2 million in investment to scale up its production, sale and supply of Black Soldier Fly eggs and larvae.

In expansion news, Agronutri, a new Brazilian animal nutrition company, is preparing to open an industrial site in Paraná this month. The facility will have a nameplate capacity of 35,000 tonnes/year of premix, concentrates, and other micro-ingredient products. Portuguese animal byproducts company ETSA is expected to open a new plant in Coruche in H1 2024. This plant will initially produce three new products for the feed market. Finally, ADM has invested $33 million in a new pet food production line in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, which will enable the factory to triple production capacity.

In other news, China has approved 37 genetically modified corn seed varieties and 14 GM soybean varieties, taking it close to commercial planting of GMO corn and soybeans. Beijing has been steadily moving to open up the GM seed market in recent years.

Finally, South Korea reported the country’s first outbreak of lumpy skin disease at a cattle farm in Seosan. Lumpy skin disease, which reduces milk production, is a highly infectious viral disease affecting cattle and buffalo which is transmitted by insect biting. It does not pose a risk to humans.

Global feed additive prices moved in different directions over the past seven days. Asian lysine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine all turned weak, while recent bird flu outbreaks and turkey culling have dented US methionine demand in October.

In Asia, lysine sulphate average export prices dropped by 8.5% within two weeks due to high utilisation rates and low domestic demand. Threonine market sentiment started to weaken, although spot material was reported to be tight.

In Europe,  market sources continued to report a lack of methionine, but there is good coverage for Q4. Lysine HCl was described as a quiet market but one reseller was expecting “more fireworks to come” because there was not enough material for  Europe.

In North America, D-Calpan spot prices have dropped to an average of $9.00/kg, 61% below the October 2022 level. Tryptophan and threonine supply remain snug in the US market.

In South America, prompt supply of several ingredients is limited on delayed imports from China. DLM prices have risen by 13% in October to $2.65/kg on average; new offers were at $2.80/kg.
