Mintec proposes to launch seven new European & US dairy Mintec Benchmark Prices

All Market Notes 29 November 2021

Mintec is proposing to launch seven new weekly Mintec Benchmark Prices assessments for the European and US dairy markets.

The proposal is for three European whey protein assessments, three US whey protein assessments and one European anhydrous milk fat assessment, with further proposed assessment details in the table below.

Mintec is proposing to launch these seven assessments on Thursday 6 January 2022 and is collecting feedback on this proposal from any market participant involved in the dairy industry until Thursday, 16 December 2021.

The proposed assessments, including their specifications, are:

The proposed assessments would reflect the transactable value at 16:00 UK time for the prices of the above-mentioned products.

The proposed assessments would provide additional pricing information and transparency for the dairy industry. Over the last few years, 80% Whey Protein Concentrate [WPC80] has become one of the most important dairy commodities as demand for high protein dairy products has increased. WPC80 is universally used for sport nutrition and dietary products. A similar increase in interest has been seen in the 90% Whey Protein Isolate [WPI90] market. WPI90 is used in many food applications, such as dry mix beverages, sport nutrition, and cultured dairy products as well as whipped toppings.

Anhydrous milk fat [AMF] is an important raw material to produce bread, cakes, chocolate, and pralines but is also used in ready meals and ice cream.

Publishing US and European Mintec Benchmark Prices for AMF, WPI & WPC will give the industry further transparency and risk management tools.

Please send any feedback on this proposal to methodology@mintecglobal.com by Thursday 16 December, and clearly state which market note your comments relate to, and if comments are intended for publication by Mintec.

Mintec will acknowledge receipt of all comments by email.
