The average price of potatoes in NEPG countries (Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Great Britain) increased by 6% to EUR 177/MT in the last three months (Feb ‘21-Apr ‘21), compared to the previous three-month average (Nov ‘20-Jan ‘21). This is in line with higher demand from the foodservice sector and projections of tighter supplies for the 2021/22 marketing year (MY).
Lower production is projected for the 2021/22 MY, in line with growers reducing the area devoted to potato production. Furthermore, adverse weather conditions, in April 2021, have caused problems for growers. There have been a number of nights where the temperature has been below zero degrees. Accordingly, planting has been delayed and some market participants have reported browning of leaves. The full impact of the damage is currently unknown and is likely to become clearer in the coming months.
