The six-month (Jun-Nov) average price of EU paper rose by 13.9%, compared with the previous six months, to EUR 1,074.2/MT, driven by robust demand amid limited supply availability as estimated by Mintec (May 2021 paper market outlook). However, the magnitude of the price increase was slightly higher than anticipated, mainly due to supply disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to limited container availability, higher sea and inland freight costs, soaring raw material and energy prices.
The significant increase was seen across linerboard prices, with virgin and recycled grades were the most impacted papers over the last six months. Limited supply availability, due to deferred maintenance schedules from spring to autumn, also supported paper prices.
