Summer heatwaves lower Bulgarian sunflower seed prospects, USDA says

Bulgarian 2021/22 sunflower seed production is forecast at 2.02 million tonnes, according to the USDA, with the harvest approaching 1.94 million tonnes as of the end of October, 18% more than at the same time last year.

The agency noted favourable spring rains but summer heatwaves negatively affected yields, with the average production yield estimated at 2.4 tonne/ha from a production area of 838,000ha. Exports of Bulgarian sunflower seeds in 2021/22 have been adjusted down from 800,000 tonnes to 750,000 tonnes (black oil-bearing sunflower seeds and de-hulled seeds for confectionary and snack purposes). Bulgaria exported 653,000 tonnes of sunflower seeds between October 2020 and June 2021, a decline of 4% compared to the same period in the previous season.

Amid the soaring sunflower seed prices, the USDA speculates that famers will expand their sunflower seed production area in 2022. This is also due to rising demand from Asia following supply tightness in soyabeans there. Indeed, the Mintec prices of confectionary grade sunflower seed of East European origin, delivered on a DDP basis UK, increased by 26% in the twelve months through 20th October, to USD 1,548/MT. The Mintec Benchmark Prices of sunflower oil (FOB Northwest Europe) were 31% higher year-on-year on 8th November, at USD 1,400/MT. The benchmark previously peaked at USD 1,760/MT on 12th March 2021.
