Hurricane Agatha formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean on 28th May and is headed for landfall on the south-eastern coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Agatha has rapidly intensified into a Category 2 Hurricane, which will continue until it makes contact with land during the next 24 hours. It has also been suggested that after moving across Mexico, the storm could re-intensify in the Gulf of Mexico, potentially threatening the United States.
The hurricane is the first named storm of the 2022 season and the heavy rainfall and strong winds that it will bring will cover the state of Oaxaca, which could lead to flash flooding and destruction. Oaxaca is a key producing region of mango, maize (corn), peanuts (groundnuts), sugarcane and goat meat in the country. Mexico is the largest exporter of mango, mostly to the United States, therefore, if there is severe damage in Oaxaca due to Hurricane Agatha, the supply of mango could suffer.
